CONWAY, Ark. _ One big inning was all the University of Central Arkansas Bears needed on Sunday to beat the Southeastern Louisiana Lions 16-5 in seven innings at Bear Stadium.
The Bears (12-13, 3-6), who won the series 2-1, sent 13 batters to the plate in a nine-run third inning and cruised from there. UCA added four runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth for its first run-rule game of the season. The Bears scored their 16 runs on just 10 hits, but took advantage of seven walks and four hit batters.
The Lions (15-9, 5-4) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning but did not score again until the seventh when they were down 16-1. SLU starter Joseph Koon allowed nine runs, six earned, all in the decisive third inning. In that frame, UCA scored nine runs on just six hits. Zack Dickson started the parade with a bunt single and Kyle Prevett’s sacrifice bunt sent him to second.
SLU right fielder Cody Gougler then dropped Ethan Harris’ easy fly ball, loading the bases. Jonathan Davis singled up the middle to give the Bears the lead for good at 2-1. Catcher Michael Marietta picked up an RBI when he was hit by a pitch with the bases full. Junior designated hitter Jake Fuller then doubled into the right-field corner, clearing the bases for a 6-1 lead.
Greg Noble added an RBI single and Prevett brought in a run with a safety squeeze bunt. Ethan Harris’ base hit to left field plated the final run of the inning.
UCA junior starter Dustin Ward (3-2) shook off the early run and went five innings, allowing 7 hits and striking out 5. Freshman Jackson Lowery pitched the final two innings, striking out the first two batters he faced in the sixth but then allowing 4 runs in the seventh.
All but two starters had RBIs for the Bears, led by Fuller and Jonathan Houston with three each. Harris, Davis, Marietta, and Bryan Willson had two RBI each. Harris, Davis and Dickson scored three runs apiece for the Bears, who matched their season high with 16 runs.
UCA batted around again in the fifth inning. Houston had a two-run single, Harris had an RBI base hit and Marietta walked for another RBI. In the sixth, the Bears had a two-out rally that produced three more runs. The big blow was a two-run double down the left-field line by Willson.
UCA, which has won three of its last four games, hosts UALR at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
