CONWAY, Ark. _ The University of Central Arkansas women's track and field team was named as an All-Academic Team this week by the U.S. Track & field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Senior Erika Setzler also received All-Academic honors from the organization, the first for a student-athlete since UCA moved to NCAA Division I.
Setlzer, a junior distance runner from Conway, had a 3.30 grade-point average in Kinesiology/Physical Education at UCA. She was the Southland Conference outdoor champion in the steeplechase, setting a school record with a time of 10:31.90. That time broke her own record by more than 10 seconds and was nearly 20 seconds ahead of second-place Samantha Watson of Oral Roberts. Setzler also finished 10th at the prestigious Drake Relays earlier this year.
Setzler was also 17th at the SLC cross country championships and 85th at the NCAA Cross Country Regionals. She turned in two ninth-place finishes at the SLC indoor championships in the 3,000 and 5,000 meters.
The UCA squad had a team GPA of 3.09, the highest among three Southland Conference schools to make the list. The award is based on a team's academic and athletic achievements. Teams named to the list must have a cumulative team GPA of at least 3.00.
