HAMMOND, La- Despite striking out 16 times, the University of Central Arkansas baseball team outlasted Southeastern Louisiana in a 6-5, 11-inning Southland Conference victory at University Field on Saturday. The Bears (19-24, 7-13) move to 3-0 in extra-extra inning games for the season. The Lions (23-19, 10-10) also outhit the UCA 11-6 for the game.

SLU struck first when three hits and an error led to run in the bottom of the second. The Bears tied it up in the third when junior second baseman Josh Huffman led off with a triple and scored on Scott Cline ground out.

The Lions took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third on a Josh Cryer RBI-single. Cass Hargis and Ty Summerlin drove in runs in the fourth, to give Southeastern a 4-1 advantage.

In the top of the sixth, Huffman recorded a two-run double to cut the deficit 4-3. In the same innings, junior first baseman Richey Irvin scored on a Wade Miley wild pitch and Huffman scored on a passed ball by the catcher, putting the Bears up 5-4.

The Lions tied up the game in the seventh when Brandon Street was hit by a pitch and later scored from third while Xaiver Qualls induced a rundown between first and second base.

Huffman once again sparked the offense in the 11th when he led off with a base hit and later scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Graham Martin.

Huffman finished the game 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two runs batted in.

UCA junior starter Jeremy Cloud lasted 5.2 innings, allowing eight hits, three runs, two walks and a strikeout. Senior Matt Whitaker (3-4) picked up the win by going 4.2 innings, and giving up two hits, six walks and two strikeouts.

Miley struck out 10 and allowed five hits, four earned runs and five walks in six innings. Reliever Rene' Leblanc (1-4) suffered the loss.

The Bears and Lions will wrap up the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
