BEARS AND ISLANDERS BATTLE TO 11-11 TIE

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas- Due to travel arrangements, the Central Arkansas-Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball game ended in an 11-11 nine inning tie at Chapman Field on Sunday afternoon. The Bears move to 24-25-1 overall and 11-15-1 in Southland Conference play, while the Islanders go to 22-28-1 and 14-12-1. The game was the first tie for the Bears since February 12, 1997 when UCA and Henderson State played to a 7-7 draw.

TAMUCC took an 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first on four singles. UCA senior right fielder Chris Houk led off the top of the second with a solo home run, tying him for the school career record with John Burgess and Matt Warren with 23 blasts.

The Bears cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the third when Josh Huffman and Kent Taylor hit back-to-back doubles. Huffman's double extended his hitting streak to a team season-high 15 games.

Three hits and two errors led to a four-run third inning for the Islanders. Right fielder Chase Williams hit a three-run homer in the fourth to move TAMUCC's lead to 10-2.

The Bears cut into the eight-run deficit over the next two frarmes. Junior Kevin Rawls scored on a balk and sophomore Eric Tennyson hit a RBI-double to make the game 10-4 in the fifth inning. UCA added five runs in the sixth on a solo home run by senior Scott Cline, a RBI-triple from Rawls, a RBI-double by Tennyson and two-run single by senior pinch hitter Derrick Corso.

The Bears tied the game with two outs in the top of the ninth when junior Richey Irvin hit a solo home run off of Bryant Sparkman. Cline and sophomore Graham Martin followed with back-to-back doubles, putting the Bears up 11-10.

The Islanders tied the game in the bottom of the ninth on a sacrifice fly by second baseman Ernie Olivarez.

UCA starter Daniel Price lasted 2.2 innings and gave up eight hits and three earned runs. Senior Matt Whitaker came in relief and struck out eight while allowing six hits, four runs and three walks in 5.2 innings. Islander starter Justin Grota went 5.2 innings and gave up 10 hits, seven runs and fanned seven.

At the plate Rawls went 3-for-4, while Tennyson, Cline and Martin added two hits each. Stephen Flora and Trey Hernandez had three hits each for the Islanders.

UCA will travel to Cape Girardeau, Mo. to begin a two-game series with Southeast Missouri on Tuesday.
