CONWAY, Ark _ Tye Throneberry’s eighth-inning home run carried the
University of Central Arkansas Bears to a 6-4 victory over the Murray
State Thoroughbreds on Tuesday night at Bear Stadium.
Throneberry,
a junior center fielder from White Hall, hit a two-out, two-run home
run to right center that scored shortstop Graham Martin with the
go-ahead run. Throneberry finished 3 for 4 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored.
UCA (11-6) also got a solo home run from Martin, his first of the season, to lead off the sixth inning.
The
Bears took a 2-0 lead in the third inning as Throneberry led off with a
single, Casey Cooper singled and Zack Dickson walked to load the bases
off MSU starter Dan Huff. First baseman Josh Huffman was hit by a pitch
to bring in the first run before Cooper scored on a double play ball.
The
Thoroughbreds (12-5) put up three runs in the fourth inning, with right
fielder Bryan Probst proving the big blow with a 3-run home run. UCA
tied it at 3-3 with an unearned run in the fifth inning but MSU re-took
the lead with a single run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly.
UCA
tied it at 4-4 with Martin’s home run in the sixth. Senior righthander
Matt Humphrey pitched the ninth for the Bears and worked around a
leadoff single and hit batter to record his first save of the year.
Junior Jeremy Brewer got the win with two scoreless innings.
The teams meet in the series finale at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
