CONWAY, Ark _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears got a solid
pitching performance from junior Brandon Solberg but could not
manufacture enough offense in falling 2-1 to Southeastern Louisiana on
Saturday in Southland Conference play at Bear Stadium.
The
Bears (11-9, 4-4) got five hits, including a solo home run from senior
Jonathan Yerby to lead off the second inning. Southeastern’s Jordan
D’Arensbourg answered with a home run for the Lions to tie the game at
1-1 in the fifth inning.
The difference was a sacrifice fly
by SLU’s Ty Summerlin in the eighth inning that scored Cass Hargis with
the game-winner. Hargis had hit a one-out triple to center field.
Solberg
(2-2) went eight innings, allowing just three hits and two earned runs,
and struck out 1 and walked 1. Matt Humphrey got the final two outs of
the ninth inning, striking out 1. The Lions brought in their junior
closer Chris Franklin in the ninth and for the second consecutive day
he earned the save, his sixth of the year.
Yerby, moved from
third base to first base for the first time this season, was 2 for 4 to
lead the Bears. Senior Josh Huffman had a triple, his first of the
season.
SLU starter Brandon Efferson (3-1), in control most
of the day, went 7.1 innings, striking out 7 and allowing 5 hits. The
Lions, on a six-game winning streak, stayed in a first-place tie in the
SLC standings at 6-2.
Game 3 of the series is set for 1 p.m. Sunday.
